im having a problem with a win 98 system. After scanning and removing spyware with several differnt software packs i decided to do a repair install of the OS. After doing this i realized that the dialup modem is not working properly. I have tried 3 differnt modems with no luck on any of them. I can load the drivers and evrything will look fine but the modem will not respond. I uninstalled the com port drivers and reinstalled from win disk it still did nothing.
i dont want to have to do a full reinstall of the os but i may have to. :(

Have you tried completely uninstalling the modem. Shut down. Physically take the modem out. Boot Up, shut down. Put the modem back in and boot up, Hardware wizard should come up.
When you were in Modem Properties, did it show a conflict???? Are these winmodems by chance???

yes i did try this. I've also tried 2 other modems besides the first one. It's a strange little problem.

Restart in MSDOS mode (Start-Shutdown-MSDOS)
Type the following at the command prompt:
echo ATM1L3X0DT12345 > COMx (hit<enter>)
(where x is the serial port number to which the modem is connected)
The modem dials the touch-tone digits "12345".
To hang up the modem, type the following command at a command prompt, where x is the serial port number to which the modem is connected:
echo ATH0 > COMx
If the modem does not respond with a dial tone or communication signal in MS-DOS mode, there may be something physically wrong with either the modem or the COM port.
If the modem does not respond with a dial tone or communication signal in Windows 98/98 Second Edition but does respond in MS-DOS mode, Windows 98/98 Second Edition may not be communicating correctly with your COM port.
The COM port has not been detected.
Then you would go to START | Settings | Control Panel
Double click Add NEw Hardware, and then follow the instructions on the screen to detect the COM port.
or
The serial port device drivers are damaged.
In which case START | RUN
Type in
sfc (hit<OK>) this will verify the integrity of the serial port drivers (Serial.vxd, Vcomm.vxd, and Serialui.dll)
or
There is a resouce conflict
or
Dial-Up Networking is damaged
or
Well I ran out of Or's.....:D
