System Locked....
Hi!
I have a peculiar problem with my system. Whenever I try booting into Windows 98, I get an error " Warning: The Lock command enables direct disk access by programs that can corrupt file names and\or destroy disk data, resulting in the loss of files on your disk" Are you sure (Y/N)? I tried with "Y" as well as "N", and restarted but the message still remains the same. I am unable to load Windows 98. How do I go about solving this problem without having to format the drive?? Thanx in advance Nitin. |

You need to reboot with a Windows 98 Start-Up-Disk or Bootdisk. To do this the computer must be set to boot from a Floppy as the first boot device.
Once at the A:/> prompt you type the following: unlock C: (hit <enter>) You may get this warning:The LOCK command enables direct access by programs that can CORRUPT file names and/or DESTROY disk data, resulting in the loss of files on your disk. Are you sure (Y/N)? Just type "Y" If you do not have a start-up disk or boot disk, go HERE, download the file Windows 98 Custom, No Ramdrive. (do not download it directly to a floppy). After it is downloaded, double click on it and it will extract the files to the floppy disk you have inserted. Then boot the locked one with this floppy. If your computer is not configured to boot from a floppy, as the 1st boot device, you need to get into SETUP to do this. When the 1st screen comes up you start tapping the DEL key (or what ever key the screen tells you to use to get into SETUP.) Once in SETUP, find the menu item that allows you to change the boot order, and make the FLOPPY as the 1st one. SAVE & EXIT.
