"Invalid system disk"

First of all, I have a laptop computer which is 4 or 5 years old. A Compaq Presario with Win. Me, one of the worst OS's ever. When I start the computer it says the basic "Invalid system disk replace and hit any key" something like that. My computer will not let me move on to any other screen. No, I do not have a floppy in the drive, no cd, no nothing. I've tried running old setup floppy disks, but I have accomplished nothing. The laptop came with Win ME and there were no installation disks that came with it. The system restore cd doesn't work either.
