Howdy. I just recently set up a computer as a server but I don't quite understand a couple things. Mostly, how do I get my own 'www.whatever.com' address to point to my computer without having to use an IP address. I want it to work like it should (www.whatever.com/page1... not http://'IPADDRESS'/page1). Might sound like a stupid question, but I'm new to the server setup thing, lol.

You have a couple of options.
You get a free domain name from a system like no-ip.com.
They will asociate a domain name to your IP Address and also have software to keep the domain associated with the IP incase it changes.
You could purchase a domain name and control it with a system such as zoneedit.com
You can then point/redirect the domain name to your IP.
If you want the full blown system then you need to have a server and associate the domain name with the server.
You will need to have a DNS server to do this and unless you have this with Linux or Windows 2003 etc. then you cannot do it.

Thanks for the help! I'll look into these options and see what would work best for me.

Another suggestion is http://www.dot.tk/
they provide free domains such as "whateveriwant.tk"
the only problem is you never own the domain... they just allow ya to use it for free but if its a personal website thats no problem at all like if it would be if a business...
