You would have to format the drive in order to "uninstall" Windows 95. As to which operating system you should get, and I'm assuming your rig is a few years old since you're currently running WIN95, I would get WIN98SE if I were you. When you have formatted the C: drive, you can then install WIN98SE as your operating system.

hi

before you "uninstall" 95, please FIRST make yourself a floppy that can see and get files off the CDROMdrive.

do you know how?
do you know how to test this?

begin here...

It would be advisable to first look at the basics to see if the system is robust enough for W98. Don't forget that 95 really didn't need much in the way of memory or CPU.

Could you post what your computer is made of? like CPU, memory, hard disk size, etc.

It about 10 yrs.old
so what you have is probably what is referred to as a "486" and not a 466Mhz processor
In any event, the minimum requirements for installing WIN98 are available here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q182751) if you want to look them over before making your decision.

You can uninstall Windows 95 manually, I have done it several times.

However, if you are going to upgrade, DO NOT GET ME - that's my personal opinion, but it's garbage. Windows 98SE is the best, unless you want to go to W2K. oops 486 and W2K don't think so.....

I would run Belarc Advisor to see exactly what kind of system you have, you can download it Murf's Garage (http://members.cox.net/joemurphy/murfdown.htm)

This program will identify almost everything you will need to know.

If you have 32MB memory, that is sufficient, I have installed Win 98 with 16MB slow but will run. Your Hard Drive is important as Win 98 takes up a lot more space then Win 95.

As GretaP indicated -10 years ago don't think they made a 466 processor... so it's probably a 486 computer.

If you have valuable data on the machine and can't back it up or don't want to loose it, then one option is to get an upgrade version of Win 98 - I would not advise that, will work, but a full install is better.

If you need to know how to uninstall Win 95 manually let us know.

Why uninstall Windows 95 on a 486? Wouldn't any upgrade run slower and take up more memory?
