For thiose that missed it, it was a link to Google Maps showing a radio image of the mars surface. They did a similar thing with imagery of the moon once. I'm sure you can still find those links, if you look around or browse maps.google.com.

Nick, Google regularly has a special Google logo and sometimes a relative link (usually to a Google search) for holidays, events, anniversaries etc. Not every day, but once in a while.
