Help, everytime I right click a link to open it up in a second window, it just freezes. I have done a scan and everything comes back good. Have no pop-up blockers on the computer so that is not stopping it from openning up. May have deleted something I should not have. Security levels are set medium safe and friendly URLS are enabled. Would really like to wipe the computer and reinstall Windows back on it, but I do not know how to do this and would need step by step help on doing it. I do have the Windows 98 disc that came with the computer and code too.

For the "no second window" problem, assuming you're using Internet Explorer, see the possible fixes on this page. Scroll down to and run the "regsvr32" commands first and if that doesn't fix it, scroll back up to the Folder Options>File types edits and do them.
If you want to do a clean install (wipe everything off the drive and reinstall Windows), instructions start on this page with deleting and re-creating partitions. Repartitioning is not absolutely necessary and if you want to skip that step, the link to the next step is at the bottom of that page. Keep in mind that everything will be deleted from the drive including your data...documents, pictures, music, email, address book, etc...so back up everything you want to keep to CD or another harddrive before you start. |

re: more news
Sorry I should of also said that I can not get links to open that require another window, meaning when I click a link or right click it, it still won't open up. And yes I am running IE. So to open those pages you said to, I would need the full address or whatever you call it that opens it up, to copy and paste it in the address bar and open it up in the main window. Thank you.

Just right click on the link in my post, left click on "Copy shortcut," then paste it into the address bar.

The regsvr32 shell32.dll is for XP and ME. Since you're running Windows 98, you don't run that one, run regsvr32 shdoc401.dll instead.

I tried the regsvr shdoc401, also did an auto fix on my IE, went back to an older version and downloaded the new version again and it still wont work. I t also wont open while holding the ctrl key and clicking the link. I just dont know, I guess I will have to take it in. For some reason, I can not wipe it either. I guess the last guy that worked on it, put Windows 98 SE on it and that disk I do not have. So its off to the shop I go unless anyone else can think of something to try. Thanks again

I totally forget the easiest thing to try. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, scroll down to "Reuse window for launching shortcuts." If it's checked, uncheck it, click OK.

Ok first things first. I want to thank you for all your help and time you put into helping me solve my problem. I just want to let you know I apperciate it alot. I did do the internet option thing in the last post that you said to do. But I am afraid it still does not work, so I guess I either break down and buy a new computer or take this one in and get it looked at. But again Thank you so much. And even though it is not fixed, I did learn alot of new things.

It's possible that your version of oleaut32.dll has been overwritten by an incompatible version.
Try this file, it will replace oleaut32.dll with the correct version. Download mcrepair.exe from here. Close IE, run mcrepair.exe and reboot afterwards. (When you run this executable, it asks you whether you wish to overwrite newer files, make sure to click YES for each file.)
