What monitor are you using? Is it configured properly in Device Manager or is it listed as a generic Default Monitor? You might need to change it to the proper manufacturer/model.

I have it set for a Goldstar 1430. The monitor supported 256 under win98

Hmmm, are you sure you downloaded and installed the right video driver?
Do you have a restore disk that came with your system?

No I don't have a disk for the computer. It was give to me and I am trying to get ready to use for my son. When I set the display for 256 and reset the cumputer it gives me a blue screen protection error when it boots up.Can you copy a boot disk and I will download it and try it.

Can you tell me what the error is that you get?
Incase you want to be sure exactely what make/model your video adapter is you can download and run Belarc. It will scan your system and report the exact video adapter your running. Just incase we have the wrong drivers installed.

Here's what the manufacturer saids:
How to get a resolution and refresh rate higher than a standard mode (640x480) under Windows?
A: There might be a problem with the graphics driver. We suggest the following steps:
1. Check your SiS graphics chip model.(Use SiS OCIS to identify.)
2. Download the correct driver and run the installation.
3. Restart your PC.
4. The resolution will be adjusted automatically high than 640x480. If it didin't, you may change resolution and refresh rate under "Display Properties".
As to monitor type selecting, many users do not know how to do it. The correct procedure has been listed below:
1. Go to "My Computer","Control Panel", "Display", "Settings", "Advanced","Monitor", then press "Change".
2. Select the monitor driver which matches your monitor type from the device list or you can provide the driver yourself by using "Have Disk" button.
3. After setting up correctly, SiS6326 Display Properties will only show those modes which your monitor can support automatically.
