scandisk

hi,
for a quite a while now my pc has been running scandisk in thorough scan mode everytime i dont shut it down properly. my pc crashes a lot which i can put up with but a real annoyance is that when it crashes and i start it up again. it will scandisk once in standard mode and if my pc crashes again it will scan in thorough mode. if i cancel the scan in thorough mode (which i have to as it takes about 9 hours to complete) it will scandisk in this mode every time i start up my pc even when it wasn't just improperly shut down. it will only stop trying to scandisk at the begging of start up if i let it run the thorough scan. Which i dont have time for.
i still would like the pc to scandisk in standard mode everytime my pc is improperly shut down but just never in thorough. can anyone tell me how to change this setting? i have tried asking this question once before on this forum and was told to go to the settings on the scandisk window but there was nothing there to tell the pc to stop doing thorough scaning.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
