iTunes sells songs for 99¢ each. I don't think there's a monthly subscription.

GarageBand.com (http://www.garageband.com/) has free unlimited mp3 downloads, but requires a free signup.

also Morpheus ;) is a DL prog which has 2 settings/modes Free and Pay
you can use the free one as long as you like and i find it quite fast and nice to use, the only difference from the pay that i know of is the free version has advertisemants and the pay monthly one has new versions of the programme that you can download and may be a bit faster.

Using Morpheus to download copyrighted music would of course be illegal, which I'm sure you're aware of. Though, using it to download music that has been publically released to the internet by the copyright holder (usually the artist) is perfectly fine. Does Morpheus have a feature to determine which is which?

not that i am aware of..
it only has a disclamer saying they only provide the service and you are only supposed to download none copyrighted material. but i am unaware of any function to disern which is copyrighted and which is not

Sound Click (http://www.soundclick.com/) is free. It is all Indie artists, but there is a lot of good music there.
