I'm new to this forum but hope someone can help as I've tried googling my question with no clear answer. I'm about to buy a laptop and plan to use it in my music room; my plan is to buy a wireless router to install upstairs at our main computer so I can have internet and email access on my laptop downstairs. In addition to my other plans for the laptop (general productivity, audio files, photos, etc), I was hoping to use the laptop as a TV set for when I might want to retreat to that room and watch a little TV. I understand you can buy software to allow you to watch tv on your computer, but here's my area about which I am unclear: while we have cable tv (and high speed cable internet as well), there is no cable outlet available in the room in which I plan to have my laptop. Can I watch TV on my laptop in some way, or will I have to find a way to install a cable outlet in that room as well? Thanks for your help, y'all! Ringo999

You can watch free-to-air TV by purchasing a USB TV tuner (digital is preferred over analog). You'll need access to an antenna wall outlet, or a set of rabbit ears. To watch cable, you'll need access to a cable wall outlet, as well as a device to input that signal to your laptop (some USB TV tuners are capable of accepting cable TV input, but you'll need to know if it's digital cable or analog cable).

if your laptop is tv ready, you can purchase a wireless tv transmitter and receiver at your local radio shack or similar store.
