Old dos games

I want to play a few old games that will not run in w2kp. What is the quickest way of getting them to run? I dont want to repartition because I just got the computer back to the way I want it. I tried to use a dos boot disk from bootdisk.com, but it would not let me change to drive C where the game is installed. Any help would be appreciated..Thanks

Hi there, welcom to CTH.

The biggest problem you will be encountering is you probably have Windows 2000 using NTFS file system. At best, a DOS game will only work with FAT32 (sometimes only with FAT16).

What games are you talking about?

You could try using DOSBox to run those old games, but it won't likely get around the file system problem smurfy pointed out. However, very few games, even old MSDOS ones, rely on a particular file system.

When I partitioned the drive, I left it fat32. I never understood the advantages of NTFS, so I didnt use it. I tried starting from the command prompt, no help, I tried using the dos boot disk from bootdisk.com, no help. It would not let me change directories to get to the game installed on drive C. The game that I want to play (and my kids too) is Janes/EA advanced tactical fighters. I know its about ten years old, but I still enjoy playing it. There are other things that wont run in 2000 either that I would like to use. I tried to edit the shortcut like I did with 98se, but the "run in dos" option is not there (big surprise). Do i need to do a dual boot with 98se? Will I have to repartition the drive again? I have an old drive that I can use for 98se, and I have a place on the secondary channel to install it. What I was hoping to do is use a boot disk of some kind, just to load the older stuff. BTW, thanks for the quick response, hope to hear back from you soon. CHRISCO

Didnt see the post on DOSbox. I installed it and followed the instructions. I mounted the C:\janes folder, changed to the proper directory, but when I ran fa.exe, it told me that it could not be run in dos mode. I thought that was what this thing was supposed to do? Im a little confused..Chrisco

How To Enable Application Compatibility-Mode Technology in Windows 2000 SP2 and SP3
Try to enable Windows 95 compatibility mode for the game.

Failing that, you'll need to try out the program I suggested.

Thanks, but no help

I tried DOSbox, it it wouldnt let me run the .exe file in dos mode. I looked at the other link you provided, will it work in SP4? It talks about SP2 and 3, but doesnt mention 4. I just dont want to change something that will kill my computer again. It took me a week to get it back the way I want it last time--lol. I guess the big question is, what would prevent a program from running in 2000? I know 2000 doesnt actually use dos like 95/98/me. Is this game just too old? It was made in 1997. Maybe Ill try DOSbox again?

Don't know why DOSbox wouldn't run it, but glad you got it working anyway. And no, enabling compatibility mode doesn't effect any programs other than the one you're enabling it for.

On to Question #2

I have a usb joystick. It will not work for this game. Hate to bother you guys again, but it seems like you have the answers. The joystick is a saitek, cyborg graphit usb. The game is janes/ea fighters anthology. If this is the wrong place to ask the question, let me know, and Ill look in other postings. I tried the compatability settings in win 95 and 98se. When I run the game, (thanks to you) it will not let me select the joystick for control. I tried to use my old joystick to avoid the usb issue, but I didnt realize that I built this computer without a gameport. Hope you can help (again)---Chrisco in Texas
