hi Gil

we'll need to know the operating systems of these machines
1
what does the one connected to cable run on?

2
and what does the other run on?

we'll also want to know how many NICs you have in the one connected to the cable

This is an easy one, Gil.
Get a 4 port router.

hi again
I had been told this can be done, and these last couple days I have been trying to do this with an XP machine, connected to cable.

Put in a second NIC for connecting to a win98se machine, and I can tell you I was getting nowhere.

jeesh, try as I might, it would not network the two local machines, (at times I even lost cable access) and it was no real surprise, but if networking two locals did not work, ICS was a no go too.

haven't yet tried third party routing software as a possible workaround.
BUT, far as I am concerned my conclusion is that XP and 98se are a bear to even TRY make them work together in two different networks.

that's why everybody will tell you to use a router
(even the cable techie, when you meet him in the pub)

dunno what two XP machines would do
I could perhaps try it, on another rainy day, but I think it won't be fun either.

I also dunno what two win 2000 machines would do.

and I also dunno what two win98se machines would do.
I could perhaps try THAT, on yet another rainy day, and I think this one may actually get off the ground as far as seeing the other puter is concerned.
I also think one needs better than win98se's ICS for cable modem sharing, but it may work with ICS alone.

when I get it working, you'll prolly hear that whoopie.

actually, our cable ISP offers a second IP for about $ 3.05 per month extra, and they sell a hub to do this...

update

you can get your earplugs out...
it is DONE...
it works!

well, with two 98se machines, it can be done
two machines, three NIC, crossover, and ICS.

and then some cussing and swearing, and manually changing settings...
the bear is getting the correct settings in the client machine.
(Now that I found out what I need in the client, I should again try this with an online XP and win98se client mix)

this site showed me how
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/sharemethod.htm

(I will keep the hub. Yep, it also works with a hub (using patch-cable), and I may use it when I have to tinker on another machine... I could have more than two machines sharing the connection)

:)

edit>
a little follow up
have tried it, and one can do it XP to cable, and win98 client too.
XP is less transparent (the wizard, I mean) but one can get it done.
