Has anybody heard of, or had any experience with a wireless router/modem combo?

DSL or Cable? And yes they exist. If you are going to get one I recommend asking your ISP for recommendations. I'd stay away from any that just have a USB connection and a single ethernet connection.
Why are you looking for a combined unit?

Cable, and i'm not looking, a friend of mine was asking for some advice as far as what type of router to get. I asked if he had a modem and he said he wanted to get an all-in-one. What are the drawbacks besides having to replace the whole unit if one function goes down??

Got one running at the office. It needs to be replaced as it is the 802.11b version. It's the one that bellsouth supplied for the business version of dsl. It works ok but I don't remember the brand. It's probably a Westell as that seems to be their favorite brand. I beleive it has only one wired port but that doesn't bother me as it goes directly to a 24 port switch. Otherwise I have been fond of the Belkin products, but I don't think they make a combo unit. They have been easy enough for me to configure and they have been good about replacing fried stuff. At home I run a Bellsouth supplied Westel(modem only) modem to a belkin wireless router and then also to a series of wired switches(2 netgear 1 belkin and 1 off brand). Yeah, I know it sounds ridiculous but 8 desktops plus repair station, 3 transitory laptops, 3 network printers at home.

What are the drawbacks besides having to replace the whole unit if one function goes down?? Thats the main one, but your choices are fewer going that way. The reason I don't like the USB/single port units is that I feel that networking over USB in general is not desirable. I've seen many issues that go away when USB is removed from the path.
