If you want to copy your data by hand (photocopiers are computers too), store your money under your matress (banks handle electronic money), fly a plane on your own (no autopilot, real-time machine control, etc), feel free to do so.
Sure, computers have problems. The user. They expect everything to be 100% PERFECT. People don't see their productivity increase 100 fold, they only see their loss of a few minutes due to "stupid errors", or the problem of "constant upgrades". Try recovering lost/destroyed computer data, compared to recovering lost/destroyed pen-and-paper data. Guess which one's easier?

My wife's haiddresser has given up computers. She was keeping her business records on her computer and-you guessed it-it crashed with her records. I asked, didn't you back up your records? She replied, no-how do you do that? She now keeps a ledger. :)

What happens when the ledger goes missing/gets destroyed?

I guess in the case of the ledger, she can start taking pictures of the ledger.
Yes Digital and 35mm.
Is there ever enough back up redundancy? :)

Sorcorors! Heathens! Infidels! all this chalk, goats blood, paper, its unatural. If God intended Man to Backup his data we'd be able to spit ink! Back in the Good Old Days we Damm well Remembered stuff like we were made to do. Only thing that can go wrong is brain dammage or death. And if I died or got dammage, data was the last of my worries!
P.S. Linux is far more stable than windows, nearly no virusus for one. and Ubuntu works just fine for the basics with very little learning curve (basics = instant messenger. Web-browser. Open Office and E-mail)
