new router slow internet connection

Hi,

Recently bought a new linksys WAG354G/UK wireless-G router thats now transmitting to one other computer in the house.

Since gettin my new router ive noticed a drop in internet speed. most internet pages are very slow (hotmail, etc) and others just time out. Ive run Dan Elwells BBST and it regularly comes back with slow ping times and low download speeds, showing usage of approx 1/3 - 1/2 of my actual bandwidth.

My connection is a 1Mb broadband with Pipex, which worked fine before using a modem. Ive installed and set up my router according to the manual and the settings that Pipex gave me.

Any help on this would be much appreciated cos i'm, quite frankly, at a loss!!

Thanks

Do you get good speed if you connect to the router via a cable?

Does your wireless card indicate a good speed e.g. 54mbps

sorry, it reads a little miss leading. ive got my computer connected via a cable from the router and my partner is the other computer thats wirelessly connected. both of our connections are showing slow and hers often restricts signing into msn, hotmail, etc. her wirless reciever shows a 75% signal strength and a good connection (54mbps).

hope this helps

here's a little more info:

resorted to using msn 7.0 because it signs in much quicker than the latest version. hotmail is still taking ages to sign into along with viewing the messages, ebay is also taking a long time to access. all other pages are as quick (instant) as usual.

im running:

Windows XP SP1, disabled firewall
Sygate Firewall Pro

my partners computer is running the same

Cheers

Are the problems cured if connecting directly to the modem?

Have you checked the cable between the router and the modem?
How are your ping times just to the router?
try tracert to someplace like www.google.com? Does it show a hop taking a long time?
