i am trying to connect two pcs on a small network to a cable modem. both computers can see the internet, but cannot see each other. i loaded the requested home network app from the xp machine onto the other system, but to no avail. They are both listed for the same workgroup, and I've played with various network settings.

Here's what I have:

desktop: win98, Pentium2, 128 ram
laptop: XP, Pentium3, 192 ram
hub: linksys NH1005
cable modem (motorola)

any ideas on how to make these guys work together?

did you check the simple stuff first? is xp the host machine? internet sharing should only be enabled in the host machine...did you run the network troubleshooter in xp?

Can you access each machine using its IP address ?

Make sure NetBEUI is installed on the win98 box

Ensure that you don't have XP's Internet Connection Firewall enabled, as that can mess up the computers "seeing" each other.
As an added note, I ran into the same problem when I installed PC-cillin 2002 on my client computer.....it did not detect an existing firewall and its personal firewall was automatically enabled, allowing me to share the internet connection with my main computer but not allowing me to "see" the other computer.

it seems the firewall was the issue, combined with the embedded firewall in the gateway.

Thanks!
