I've had a Mentor Wireless PCI 802.11g card in my computer for a few months and had it working fine with a Lynksys router in one house.
Yesterday I got a Netgear dg834g wireless ADSL modem router with a Netgear wg111 USB adaptor. I put the adaptor in 1 computer and kept the card in the other, set everything up and it worked fine. This morning I came down and neither computer was working.
It took me a few hours, but I eventually got the computer with the USB adaptor working (by telling it to have an IP address, then saying choose 1 automatically). I tried the same thing with the other computer, without success. However, later on the other computer managed to connect. In my excited state, I opened the internet, which did not work. This is the confusing part - it is connected, but I cannot go on the internet/use msn/use the network. I told windows to repair the connection, which worked for a couple of minutes and then went down. So I told it to repair again - same result. All this time, it says it is connected, with good signal.
Any idea how I can get the connection to work?
Thanks

When it says it is connected can you run ipconfig and post your results. Make sure that both computers are configured to automaticaly obtain an ip address. Connect to the wireless router. Then click on start, then run. Type cmd. Then type "ipconfig /all" without the "". Do this on both computers and post the results.

...and here's the one for the "working" computer. I say working like that because I tried to get on this morning, but it spent a couple of minutes on "Acquiring Network Address". I gave it a set IP address, and it connected but I could not get onto the internet etc. I then changed it back to Obtain address automatically and it's working fine.

It can sometimes be a matter of uninstalling the network card completely and then re installing it. Are you using the program that came with the wireless card or the windows utility to connect to the network?
I would first try both the wireless card utility and windows utility to try to connect to the network to see if it makes any difference. Then if still no luck uninstal the network card and re install with the latest drivers. I have also had a similar problem to yours recently with it taking very long time to issue an ip and sometimes not at all. I solved this problem last night by turning off the router for about 20 mins, checking again and then if nessesary do a factory reset. A last resort would be to update the router firmware but make sure you use an ethernet connected pc to carry out the update. Another possibily of course is that the router is faulty, but i would check the other things first. Hope thats of some help.

I updated the firmware as soon as I got it, but did it wirelessly - could that be a problem? Would it be a good idea to update them again via a connected computer?

No as long as it is up to date its fine. The prob with using a wireless pc to update firmware is that if you lose connection during the update it can stop the router from working and a factory reset will not fix it. Did you try the other things I suggested in the last post?

it now seems we cannot get on with either computer. I've reset the router and re-inputed everything. It did a wierd thing (on both computers) of saying its connected, for a few seconds, then it's unconnected, then doing the same thing again.
I reset the router again and have not put any of the settings on - it's an unsecured network. Both computers have connected but I cannot get onto the internet.
I am leaving this message by wiring in a computer, which works fine.

It's all sorted!
Turns out there was a problem with the USB adaptor in one of the computers - it was set that it was in USA for some reason. This obviously interfered with something. I sorted that and it's all working now.
Thanks for the help.
