Question Need Help Connecting to another computer

I'm kind of new at this stuff, and my mother-in-law would like me to gain access to her computer to do some routine maintenance, like run virus protection etc. Could anyone help me hook up to her from my computer to her computer

Welcome

If you want control of the system then if you have XP Pro you can use Remote Desktop Connection.

If XP Home you can use Remote Assistance.

If you don't want to use Windows offerings then there are tools such as RealVNC.

http://www.realvnc.com/
Install the Server on your PC you want to Access.
Install the Viewer on your PC.

You can then connect to the other PC via it's IP Address.

Are the PCs XP Home or Pro or something else?

To get the IP goto Start>Run and type
cmd /k ipconfig /all
