View Full Version : Network permissions?

I am on a basic home network. The main computer is directly plugged into the wireless router, along with another computer. The third computer has a wireless adapter (Netgear if it matters). The wireless computer can drop files into the shared folder of the main computer, but not the other. Neither the main computer, or the second hardlined computer can access the wireless computer's shared files. It says the location does not exist or that they may not have permission to enter. What the heck do I do?

Check the firewall settings on the Wireless PC.
Temporarilly disable it to test.

I've already done that. I also disable our Norton Anti-Virus, as well.

On the laptop run the Network Wizard. Make sure you choose the same workgroup and allow filesharing.

Ok, we are all on the same network, and print and filesharing is allowed. Still the same problem.

Did you run the Network Wizard on the Wireless PC?
It can sometimes jog the memory. Don't rely on windows telling you that filesharing is allowed.

Yeah, I set I up a small home or office network on each comp. The all are connected to "Workgroup". We can all see eachother. No one can go into the wireless comp. And the wireless comp can't send files to both of the other comps.

Do you have the Windows Firewall enabled?
What other firewall do you have?

Everyone's firewalls are disabled.

You could try re-running the Wireless Network Wizard.
Other than that you could wait to see if the Network Mods have any ideas.

What versions of windows are you using? I'm assuming internet access is working for all 3 PCs. Can they ping each other?

We are running a mixture of XP Home and XP Pro. Yes, we can ping eachother, and we all have internet.

We are running a mixture of XP Home and XP Pro. Yes, we can ping eachother, and we all have internet.Good that means the basic networking pieces are working and that the issue is a windows config problem.
I'm guessing that you didn't change the defualt sharing method on the PRO machine, so it is still using simple file sharing. Am I right?
When you set up the file shares, did you select allow others to modify?
What firewalls do you have installed? (Please humor me here ;) )

We have to do this at work everytime. You have to unshare and reshare the C drive to be able to see it.

I just use basic widnows firewalls. Even when you use basic file sharing, you can still get into another computer's files at the very least. When anyone tries to go in to the wirelsess comp (via view workgroup computers) it says they don't haver permission and that the logon failed). The wireless comp can access all other computers, and all other computers can access eachother (Minus the wireless). Does that makes sense?

What are you sharing on the problem machine, just a drive letter? If so try sharing a folder and see if that works.
Also can can you run "netsh firewall show config" on the problem machine and post the output back here.

I am just sharing a folder.
I tried the command you told me and it said. "Application failed to start because framedyn.dll was not found" blah blah re-install application.

Now what? Are you still getting the DLL error?
If not can you run "netsh firewall show config" on the problem machine and post the output back here.

The dll fix worked for a while but restarted and I happened again?

What did you do to solve the DLL problem? Have you done anything that would have undone your changes? If not, you may want to have the folks in cybersafety make sure you aren't infected in any way. When "netsh firewall show config" is working post its output back here.
