Setting up a network and having great difficulties with XP home. There are two PCs and a laptop. Laptop and PC 1 have XP Pro, PC 2 has Home. All three computers can be seen in my workgroup.XP home can access both the pro machines but they can only access eachother, not the Home one. I just get the message access denied.

A few things to point out:

- I can only access the home PC (PC2) through RUN \\pcname\shared folder from either of the pro ones
- I can print to the printer connected pc PC2 from either pro machine (although "guest" is shown in the print queue)
- All three firewalls are disabled
- All three are in the same workgroup
- I can ping any of them from each other

I've had this problem with similar network and XP home ages ago but haven't a clue how I got round it.

So you do have access but just not through My Network Places.

On the Home PC goto the Network Connection, TCP/IP Properties>Advanced and to the WINS tab.
Enable NetBIOS.

Another option is to run the Network Wizard. It sometimes jogs the memory of the network.

Netbios is enabled + I've run the network setup wizard twice on each machine now.

Are your sharing a folder or just a drive letter like 'C:'? If you are sharing a whole drive, try sharing a folder not under 'My documents and Settings' and see if you can access it.
