Unhappy WIN95 Video problems

I installed an older hard drive with 95 vs 4.00.950B and it only accepts 640 by 480 and 16 color palette. I'm trying to copy some files from a couple of programs that were installed earlier this year onto floppies. When I click START and then to Programs it says:
"A 16 color display driver has been detected. Storybook Weaver's (the program name) minimum requirement is a 256 color display driver. Use Control Panel to install a 256 color or true color display driver".

I went into Display Properties dialog box settings, clicked on Advanced Properties and then the Monitor tab and it says "Standard VGA 640x480". I clicked CHANGE and it shows the monitor settings at 640x480.
I clicked the Show all Devices button and clicked on Super VGA 800x600 and a box comes up saying "Windows was unable to change your display's refresh rate."
It then said to reboot your computer to accept the changes. I did and after bootup a dialog box appears saying "Your display adapter is not configured properly. To correct the problem click OK
to start the Hardware Installation wizard. I did that and it goes through the whole sequence of events that I just described.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you, Jim

Hi Jim, welcome to the forums.

We're going to need to find out what sort of video card/chip that machine uses so we can tell Windows 95 what it is capable of by loading a driver.
At the moment Windows has no idea what it is so is using it's default "safest option".

Is this a brand-name PC or a bitsa?
Any idea what sort of video card it has?

Hi Smurfy,
Thanks for your help. Yes, i'm new to this website. I was using Askme for awile but they're saying byb-bye,which I'm sorry to see, but I'm glad I found this one.
I was having this problem with no video card, settings were embedded in the motherboard, so I installed one I had for awile. It's a Stealth64 Graphics 2000 Series. I installed it's drivers and everything installed just fine but when I went to Display Properties it only displayed 16 colors again. The PC is an emachines etower 333k. I installed more RAM, now it's 192 MB.
Thanks, Jim

Stealth64 graphics 2000 series

Hi Smurfy,
Thanks for your response to my last question. After I tried everything yesterday it still only had 16 colors, so, I installed the 98SE upgrade to hopefully install 256 colors, but it didn't. The website you refered me to looks like it will fix my problem with the drivers but it references 95, now I have 98SE. If I download these drivers, even though their meant for 95, would they work also in 98SE?
Thanks, JIm

They should be OK.
My old Stealth 3D 2000 card (haven't got it any more) worked fine with the standard S3 Virge (or were they Trio - can't remember) drivers that Win98 auto-detected. Win95 needed the Diamond drivers.

What worries me here is that you may be having problems caused by the old on-board chip.
I'm going to have to do a little digging to see if I can find any specs on the eMachines motherboard.
