Unhappy stupid servers won't connect

:'( its dreadful, truly utterly dreadful.

i downloaded the BETA messenger 8.0 and it won't connect. it says something wrong with the key ports and the host files, and i click repair and it isn't able to do it.

if i go to advanced connections and test everything, it says it can't connect to the server.

also AVG can't connect to its server, i could never get skype to connect to its server, and firwfox won't connect to the internet either. there are probably other things too, but they just won't connect for some reason.

and its not a firewall. i personally don't think we have one, but mum says their one in the cable thingie, but it never gave us trouble before anyway.

i recently uninstalled Zone Alarm (which was actually only just installed) because i couldn't connect ot other computers on teh network,a nd i thought that it was blocking ms...it wasn't

I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY HELP ON THIS MATTER!!!!!
without msn i am almost nothing :'(

please i am desperate

Are you connected via a network card?
If so goto network Connections, right-click your connection and choose Repair.

In I.E.

Navigate to the following:

Menu Item Tools>>Internet Options

click on the Connections tab

Click on the Lan settings button

See if Proxy server is checked.

If it is, uncheck it and see if that solves your problem.

Some software like Zone alarm sets up a proxy for you when it's installed.

Unfortunatley, a lot of software doesn't clean up after itself.

Good luck!

Best bet, is to make sure that NOTHING is checked in the LAN Settings section. You said that AVG, Firefox, and MSN can't connect? Can anything you have connect to the internet?

Well, I'm guessing that something can connect, unless the worlds longest string/tin can/abacus hookup is installed there they are posting to this site.

The solution I gave is really only one of several that could be the problem. It's also possible that something has hijacked the host file and is redirecting things, a router could be blocking ports, etc. I just went for the easiest possible solution first. Knowing full well that the problem is always in the last place you look. Just like lost keys.

Glad to see that if absolutley nothing else, at least you have a sense of humor

Did you have anything actually useful to add, or were you just showing me that your keyboard still functions?

I'm sure InquisitiveKitt appreciates all the helpful insight that your last post has given her.

Ouch, that's not rude at all. Honestly, no idea why those three things can't connect. Don't use AVG, if my MSN doesn't connect it's because the MSN servers are down, and as for Firefox, my only guess would be that "Work Offline" is checked. In that case all you would have to do is click File, and make sure there isn't a check mark next to "Work Offline." If there is, click "Work Offline" and that will allow Firefox to try and connect. Beyond that I have no idea.
