Password for IE

Is there any way to require a password to use internet explorer? I want keep little eyes off of the internet when I am not around. Right now, a password is required to exit the screensaver, but I would like for them to be able to use other programs withouth having to do this. Thanks!

Never heard of a password for I.E. but you could use Content Advisor.

I think you could write a script to rename the executable. Perhaps even write a replacement that pops up a window that says the internet is down or something :-)

you can password ie with content advisor but all it takes is the installation of another browser to bypass it. I would suggest a program such as netnanny to help with your situation.

You could just disconnect the network connection to the PC.

You have a few options, but non of them are a basic password.

If using XP you can goto Control Panel>Set Program Defaults and Settings.
From there you can choose to disable Internet Explorer.

Another option if using XP Pro would be to apply permissions to iexplore.exe so that only certain groups users have permission to execute it.

Also there are registry tweaks to disable programs. A program such as FreshUI will allow you to add programs to a list of restricted programs.

Windows System>Security>Prevent Specified Applications>

You can add a password for access to the program.

You could also add a proxy to the browser to point back to 127.0.0.1 [home] this way any connection would just get the default blank page.

complicated ways....

This will work if your using Windows XP Pro or Windows XP Home
why not just reboot into safe mode ...
Open windows explorer

Go to this location *Replace C: with what ever your hard drive letter is
C:\Program Files\

Right click folder Internet Explorer
Click the tab named Security.

Click the advance tab "for special permissions"

Click what ever username they are using ... (Bob example user name)
"Allow | Bob | full control | C:\"

Click edit button at bottom.

And deny them all the permissions....

They can't access the folder now or anything within it.

When you want to sit with them and help them on the computer (watch thier activity)

Right click the link to Internet Explorer and choose "Run As.."

Choose your admin account and enter your password and tada you have everything setup for they can only use IE when you want them too...

If you have any other browser you might want to also set the settings for that... and you might want to also set settings for they can't use Windows explorer...

If ya need more help with those or anything give a shout..

For XP Home you would have to boot into safemode to apply the permissions.

If you're using XP Pro then you have Advanced Permissions available if you disable Simple File Sharing. No need to boot into Safemode.
