Persistent Internet Connection Losses

Howdy,

I am losing my internet conneciton every 30 mins or so now. What happens is my DSL light on my router is flashing on and off quite slowly (not flashing fast when internet is sending and receiving) and it stops flashing after about 5mins and internet works again. I don't undertand why...

Thanks.

do you refresh your internet connection regularly?

i've noticed every 4-6 days I need to login to my router (or ipconfig if no router), and release renew my ip. after this, it works again .. .

its kinda like an expiry date for ips. as far as I know. (which isnt much)

Tom,

Couple things need to be known.
1)What lights are on your modem(all of them please)?
2)When you lose connection, do you see a difference in the light status on your modem?
3)Is there any construction going on in your area?

I'm almost positive that your problem does not lie in the comptuer, but in the connection itself. I'd suggest replacing the router. If all of the issuse persist, return the router you bought, and go backwards from there. At that point you want to contact your ISP (BellSouth, Verizon, SBC, etc.) and have them run a line test and also see if they can set-up for a technician to come out to the house and check all your signals and also test the modem.

Now don't be surprised if they tell you the tech coming out is going to cost if they find nothing is wrong. Out of the multiple hundreds of thousands of tech's I have sent to residents houses, less then 1% have actually incurred a charge upon the resident. I have personally gone through what your going through, and when I replaced both my router and modem, for a gateway (router/modem in one), all of my problems went away.

I will be able to give you a more precise solution after you post the answer to the above questions.

-Steve

1) Power, DSL and Ethernet are on.
2) As I said, the DSL light starts turning on and off quite slowly then turns back on after a while and the connection is restored.
3) No construction. However, this problem occured about 6 months ago and BT had to come and fix a line in the road. But BT say nothing is wrong now.

It is a BT Voyager 205, by the way.

When your DSL light starts flashing slowly instead of quickly...that means that the connection was lost(as I;m figuring you already know).

From here you have two possible issues. The modem is going bad, or the service is getting constantly interupted by something else.

Call your ISP back, talk to a manager, and get a tech out to the house to look at it.
