red x's

need some help here. i get these little red x's in a small box at the upper left hand corner of content on multiple web pages. there is usually other content on the pages that comes up normally and on others nothing at all but the red x. can't download flash content either. can't even download shockwave or flash player. adobe tells me it's a MSN thing and all the fixes MSN suggests don't work. any suggestions? tried all the quick fix ideas of internet settings to default etc.. don't want to and shouldn't have to disable my firewall to access common content from legitimate sites. already removed norton and installed McAffee to follow one suggestion. didn't work. anyone heard of this before?? thanks in advance
