Microsoft Java VM removal question
I recently tried to remove the Microsoft Java VM from my machine. There's a removal tool for this. The problem is, even though I installed (successfully) sun's JAVA, it wouldn't work. I reinstalled MS JAVA and it works again. Mind you, I have the MS VM turned off in I.E. and the SUN JAVA turned on.
I've got Windows XP PRO on the trouble machine. My other machine has WIN XP Home and the removal/replacement worked fine. My question is, isthere something in XP Pro that's not allowing the removal to break associations? Or is there some other known issue with removing the MS JAVA VM from WIN XP Pro? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

If you really want to uninstall MS VM, and don't mind playing in the registry, here is how to do it.
1. Click Start>Run 2. Type: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.Inf,Uninstall The Microsoft VM uninstall dialog box appears. 3. Click Yes to confirm. 4. Reboot when prompted. 5. After the machine restarts, go to the systemroot for Windows XP-probably C:\Windows 6. Delete the following files or folders from the systemroot: java folder from system root jave.pnf file from systemroot\inf\folder (if available) jview.exe and wjview.exe from the systemroot\system32 folder 7. Click Start>Run 8. Type: regedit The Registy Editor dialog box appears. (Note usual precautions about backing up registry) 9. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM (Hint: Right click the + icon) 10. Delete the JAVA VM registry key. 11. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM 12.Delete the JAVA_VM registry key. Exit the Registry Editory. Reboot. Microsoft VM is now uninstalled from your system. |

The removal worked. I had to uninstall/reinstall the SUN JRE but then everything worked like a champ!
Thanks a million!

MS made a removal utility for this if you don't want to do it manually.

I used that. For whatever reason, it didn't get at least one of the things that I got when I did it manually as described here.
