Please help me with photos!

Alright...

I have microsoft digital image and photoshop.

I want to have part of a picture in color, and the other part in black white. For example, if there is a picture of a person, a tree, and a house that is in color, I want ONLY the person to be in color, and the rest of the picture to be in black and white. I know how to put the picture in black and white, obviously, but I don't know how to do what I want to do.

Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thank you for your time!

I don't have Photoshop but Paint Shop Pro is similar so the tool names and exact procedures might be different. Don't work with your original image, make a copy.
  • Make a new layer of your image copy so that you have two layers of the entire photo. Change the entire background layer to black and white by reducing saturation. (That won't be true grayscale so you might want to do other things like reducing the number of colors, changing contrast, etc.)
  • On the top layer which is still color, use a selection tool to select the area that you want to remain full color. Invert the selection so that everything you want black and white is selected.
  • Use the eraser tool within your selection to remove everything on the top layer that is to be black and white. This allows the layer underneath (the b&w layer) to show thru.
That's just a basic description of how I would do it. The actual procedures can be varied depending on your picture and how much time you want to spend on it.
