Hi,

I purchased a used laptop that had windows 2000 installed. The computer had no discs with it. I can only assume that it is a legit installation. Now, after reading a little bit on this forum I'm getting concerned about being able to reinstall this OS in the future if anything goes wrong. I found the product code from within my computer. Can I go to a repair facility and have the tech reinstall the Os?

Thanks

its good but I think (could be wrong since never used it) its for only windows. The program I gave you should find the key or code for all software installed on your computer.

O.K.

If a code # shows up, does that mean I have a legitimate installation?

No.. it just shows the key code used to install the operating system not whether it is legal or not..

the problem is when you purchased the laptop, they were also supposed to turn over all cds of all software installed on the computer or sell you a computer with nothing on the harddrive.

its a better program but it does not show the keys, at least I could not find them. Belarc advisor will get you the information without searching. So for the needs here, belarc advisor is a better choice.

I got the laptop from an Ebay auction. I wish they had included the discs. It was supposedly a corporate lease return or something or other.

I bought it off of Ebay. No discs though.

Legally, they were required to supply the disks or wipe the system prior to sale..

Can you contact them and see what they have to say??

It was supposedly a corporate lease return or something or other.Corporate license Windows keys are often used for illegal installs, since they don't require internet activation. I'd say there's a good chance you're using an illegal install of Windows.

The system was a corporate lease return.. ie: mega-company returned all their systems when the lease ran out.. To my knowledge, only XP came out with a "Corporate" version and they are running Win2000 as per the first post!!!!

The reason I'm so concerned about this is because I did a virus scan and it looks as though I have a lot of infected files. I really don't know much about computers and feel as though during my attempts to clean things up, I'll probably foul things up but good. I thought that when that happened, I could go to Best Buy or some other place and have them install widows 2000 from one of their discs. Additionaly, I thought that as long as I had this "Key" thing, there would not be a problem. From what I'm gleaning from you folks though, I might indeed have a problem. I don"t really want to have to go out and buy a new operating system. I have my Windows98SE discs for my desktop. If all else fails, is it leagal for me to use those discs on my own personal laptop?

You may be better off going to the Cyber Safety Forum here and posting a HiJackThis Log and letting the guru's there help clean your system..

Read THIS (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86677) (<-- click here) and then post the log in Cyber Safety..

There is nothing saying the Key Code is illegal and may be perfectly okay..

As for your Win98SE cd, no.. you are only legally allowed to have it installed on one computer at any given time!!

It would have to, since it was primarily used by large companies.
