Hey ya'll,
Long time reader, first time poster.
I have Win98(SE)Installed then deleted SE) version 4.10.2222. At the start up of my computer there is a screen shot of a screensaver(SS) file, or what I believe to be a SS. It has motion to it. I had downloaded this years ago a and since then deleted the "Theme". It appears right after my boot up screen disappears and before my login to Win98 screen pops up. How do I locate this file. I have done a *.* search in Windows and Dos and it does appear anywhere. I am about to reformat my hard drive and searched the Net for the same SS but to no avail. Your assistance and knowledge is greatly appreicated in advance. Peace Out ~~ Y

Hi yicub4ucme,

Search C:\Windows for *.scr and you should see it
show up with others. You can right-mouse delete it from there.

Spider,

Thanks for the quick reply. I did a *.* search in both Dos and W98. Is this not the same as a " * " search? Now dont get me wrong. About 10 different SS showed up but none of them the version that is described above. I will try the suggestion given and let you know. At the 4 letter word right now and it is not "play". Got to run. C ya~~ Y:confused:

Maybe your looking for a Desktop Picture and not a Screen Saver.
Most all pictures shown on the desktop are in
c:\windows\web\wallpaper

Spider,

Does a wallpaper have a moving image on it? I thought if it had motion it was a .scr not wallpaper. It amazes me that this is even on my computer. Could it be hidden in a hidden root directory in Dos or W98? I have my " show all files/hidden " checked. Please advise and thanks again. Y:wave:

If it has animation it's a screen saver. Desktop pictures are static images.

*.scr is the extension for screen savers. The only other animation ability
before full bootup of WindowsXX is c:\windows\options\cabs\logo.sys.
Maybe that got changed.

Third party screen savers can reek havoc on a WindowsXX machine.

You might want to look at the list in Display Properties in the
Screen Saver tab and look at each one in the demo window
and see if you can recognize it.

If this was a third party screen saver it may be in the
Add/Remove Programs (Control Panel) list.

Spider,

Home now. Now the real 4 letter word comes out, play!! J/K Anyway. I looked in the Win/opt/etc..and it asked what viewer I would like to use and I picked IE. It then brought up the file and it was the W98 logo in paint. I then did a *.src search again and as last time, it had 10 files come up. I noticed that I had reinstalled 98 back in '99 and one of the .scr is a file called "shrsc" that came up with the search function. I tried to view it and the response I get is " c:\windows\shrsc.scr is not a valid Win32 application". Could this be the file? How can I view it:confused: It has the same date as the rest of my .zip install files for 98. Speaking of these files. After install can I delete these items from the system? Thanks a Million once again to the Heros at CTH. :D Peace Out~~ Y
Post Script..... Can I not do a step by step configuration at the start up(Shift F8)and somehow determin the name and sorce of this mystery screen?

You should be able to two-click on any *.scr file and get a preview
on the screen.

There is a way to search the registry but I don't send people in
there that haven't dealt with the registry before.
One false move in the registry and you can pooch your computer.

just an idea and I'm probably way off base here but , is it possible that this is NOT really a screen saver ? maybe an animated gif or a logo used by a program that is being loaded (or trying to) at startup ?
I've never seen a screen saver that started BEFORE the win/98 screen came up. seems like it would have to be loading from DOS and not windows.
If any of this makes sense then booting to DOS and looking at the main directory (dir) should show the file. If it's showing BEFORE windows then it would have to be in that directory right ? Or is this just WAY over my head like most computer stuff ?

If this screensaver was part of a desktop theme, it is quite probably that logo.sys was changed.

This is the one that normally displays the Windows98 splash screen with the blue animated line along the bottom.

Hopefully the theme writer backed up your logo.sys when it overwrote it (do a search for logo.*) and rename it back to logo.sys otherwise use sfc to restore logo.sys from your Windows CD or options/cabs directory.

CTH and users,
Thanks for all your input. I thought that what Mr1 was saying was what is actually happening:confused: It may be that an animated .gif that has taken the place of the C:\win\opt\etc...logo\ on W98. Come to think of it, my W98 logo does not display anymore. I have not seen it (W98 logo page) on this particular computer in a long while. What would the file be called if I did boot to Dos 7.10 and did a search? I did a startup line by line item for windows and I did not not recognize anything unusual here. I did some research on how to find files in Dos 7.10 and I can not find the "root". Only a "catroot". Is this the same dir.? Thanks again ya'll for your time and patience in helping a soon to be junkie........ Peace Out~~ Y

Update... I changed my BIOS fast boot option from able to Disable and my HP logo screen came up then the "MYSTERY"=(X-Files .scr) screen and then onto the W98 log in. Changed it back to org. BIOS settings and same as b4 chng. Still bound and determined to find this critter and "mark" its origin and source(s). Any guess work from any 1. Peace Out~~ Y
No need for a second post regarding the same problem.
I've merged these two threads together to keep any confusion
down to a minimum.

Apologies, my advice above was for the shutdown screens (logos.sys and logow.sys). For the startup screen it's even easier:

Find C:\logo.sys
Rename to C:\logo.old
Reboot.
