MishY,
Thought I would run this by you and see what everybody thought.
You know how at the bottom of each persons post there are buttons for: Profile | PM | Email | etc . . . .
What if we had a button for Specs. When you click on the specs button it pops up a windows that has that members specs in a particular format. There could be a page in the users profile that would have fields to be filled out. Here is what I am thinking.
Ths is what mine would look like.
Manufacturer: COMPAQ
Model: Deskpro EX 930
System Board: - -
Processor: Pentium III 930 MHz
Video Card: pny GeForce4 mx 440 64MB
Sound Card: SBLive! SoundBlaster
Network Card: NetGear FA310TX Fast Ethernet Adapter
Modem Card: N/A
Amount of RAM: 512 MB PC133
CDROM: Mitsumi 56x max
CDR/RW: Sony 8x/4x/32x
DVDROM: N/A
Hard Drive(s): Western Digital 80 GB 7200rpm x 2
Printer: Epson Stylus Color 440
Other: Iomega Zip 250
What do you all think?

Hey Theo, this sounds a great idea, have you seen this kind of thing at other forums?
To do, I think there would have to ba a "hack" for it, I'm not meaning anything illegal, it's just the word Bulletin Board "programers" use for "add ons" to boards, and that's probably what is needed to do this!! :)
Dave.

Even if we got...
Manufacturer: COMPAQ
Model: Deskpro EX 930
System Board: ?
Processor: ?
Video Card: ?
Sound Card: ?
Network Card: ?
Modem Card: ?
Amount of RAM: ?
CDROM: ?
CDR/RW: ?
DVDROM: ?
Hard Drive(s): ?
Printer: Epson Stylus Color 440
Other: ?
and added this...
Version of Windows: Windows XP
That would help a bit more as apposed to not having anything.

lufbra,
No, I've never seen this on any other board.
Spider,
I am in total agreement. The people with more than one computer will probably raise Kain but I thought if we could somehow keep things some what standard as fas as specs go it would help out a lot.
I mean, here are what lugbra's specs look like:
Ummmmmmmm......
And here are what mine look like at the present time in my profile.
| Pentium III 933MHz COMPAQ DeskPro | PNY GeForce 4 AGP MX440 | SBLive! Sound Blaster | 512MB PC 133 RAM | 80GB 7200 rpm WD HDD | 52X Mitsumi CDROM | 12x8x32 Sony CDRW | Iomega Zip 250 |

I've been thinking about this. There are problems with the idea -
1) there is a specs field on the registration form now - how many people are using it ? Not many at all.
2) it will expand the registration form making it more laborious for people to sign up
3) we can't make those fields mandatory because a lot of people don't know that much about their PCs.
As far as setting it up on the forums - yes I can do that relatively quickly when I have time.
Do you have any suggestions on how to overcome the points I've raised ?
I happen to believe this to be a great idea and was something I've been trying to encourage for months now.

Best idea I`ve seen in a long time.
It helps heaps to know the persons computer specs.
I gave up on boards ,simply `cause people
dont post specs.
And now I need specs, `cause I can hardly read the print. :)

Hiya, Theo
For what is worth... I think is a jolly good idea. What about people with two (or more...) machines. Leave plenty of space for that, just in case
Be well
Dolores
PS
What happened to your site, by the way? Tried to pop in tonight but it seems to have moved or something (no details given)???

Hi Dolores, I'm not sure what was wrong. I just tried Theo's site and it is working now... The Ramblings of Theoran (http://ramblingsoftheoran.tripod.com/)
