Windows '95

I'm a new user, so please let me know if I doing posting this correctly.

I'm trying to troubleshoot for a friend with W'95. The right mouse button brings up a context menu, but left clicking on an item doesn't work. The mouse buttons are configured properly.

Among other things, we are trying to find out what version of '95 he has. It apparently isn't W'95B as we are unable to install Norton AV 2001; apparently that version only installs in W'95B.
We know he has two viruses and I wonder if that is what is causing the problem.

Hello Mary Ann, welcome to Cyber Tech Help. That question was posted just fine.

One of the pieces of a computer that gets dirty and or/wears out most often is the mouse.

Can you try another mouse?
If not, give it a good clean.

If still no joy, go to Windows Device Manager
right click on My computer, press R for properties and then use cursor control keys and tab key to navigate to device manager and remove the mouse from the list. Then restart the PC and see if that helps.

He may in fact have 95B. It may be one or both virii causing the problem trying to install Norton2001. If he is able to go online with this computer, Have him go here and run an online scan.

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/

If panda is unable to 'disinfect', post back the names of the virii and we will try a manual removal.

We ran on online scan with Symantec. It found W32.blebla.worm and I know he has W32.bugbear as I got an mail from him with the virus - Norton saved the day for me. The online Symantec scan doesn't scan compressed files and that's the only reason I can think that it didn't find the W32bugbear. I have the instructions to remove both W32 viruses, but this troubleshooting is done cross country by phone, I'm in CA my brother is in OH.

I believe we have to remove the viruses before we can install NAV, but that's the catch. NAV 2001/2002 will not install as it saysW'95B is required and apparently this pc doesn't have it. Another problem is very slow internet service and only one phone line. He has to borrow a cell phone so he can be on line and on phone with me.

If I could just figure out a way to get to System properties. . . Also tried Windows key+ Pause - that didn't work either. Any suggestions?

Maybe I'll just have to walk him through removal of the viri and hope for the best.

If you are trying to get to system properties to check what version of 95 he has, Two ways:

1 Hit CTRL+ESC to bring up the start menu. Use the arrow keys to highlight 'Run' and hit [enter]. Type msinfo32 and hit [enter]

2 Hit CTRL+ESC to bring up the start menu. Use the arrow keys to highlight Settings > Control Panel > System. Hit [enter] after highlighting each. ( You can also continue and access the device manager if needed)

Thanks to Jack for the link to the web site. I searched MS knowledge base, but obviously not well enough.
