Go here and download, unzip and run StartupList. Copy and paste the results in a reply.

Well, There is no sign of a virus causing this but, there is some spyware that needs to be removed.

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\CMEII\CMESYS.EXE
C:\PROGRAM FILES\PRECISIONTIME\PRECISIONTIME.EXE
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\GMT\GMT.EXE
(no name) - C:\Program Files\NewDotNet\newdotnet4_50.dll - {4A2AACF3-ADF6-11D5-98A9-00E018981B9E}
BabeIE - C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMONNAME\TOOLBAR\CNBABE.DLL - {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

First go to add remove programs and uninstall anything named:

Precision Time
Date manager
Gator
New.net

Then download install and run Spybot S&D:

Installing and running Spybot:

http://beam.to/spybotsd

1 -- create a new, 'host' folder in a convenient location (not on the desktop)

2 -- download the spybot program to it and run the setup file.

3 -- go to the Start Menu, find the program and run it. Click the "online" tab and "Search for Updates", then make your selection and click "Download Updates".

4 -- run the scan (click "check for problems"). You will see some boxes checked and others not. Remove the pre-selected items. The others are mainly "cleanup" options (you can disable this feature by clicking Settings > FileSets, and unchecking "Usage Tracking". "System Internals" should be unchecked as well unless you are confident you know what it deals with).

5 -- it is a good practice to reboot afterwards, even if not prompted.

If Spybot didn't remove these two BHO's:

(no name) - C:\Program Files\NewDotNet\newdotnet4_50.dll - {4A2AACF3-ADF6-11D5-98A9-00E018981B9E}
BabeIE - C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMONNAME\TOOLBAR\CNBABE.DLL - {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

Then go here and download and install BHO Demon. Then open it and disable the above two.

Then there is this entry:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\SUPPORT.COM\BIN\TGCMD.EXE

Is this a Sony Viao machine?

After you do the above, Boot into safe mode and run scandisk and defrag.

hi

after weeding out spyware you don't want, you can try to run speeddisk again

Well now , we all know that speedisk can put the swapfile in the speedy part of the drive, and then it defrags the drive.

speeddisk and windows defrag behave different, so once you chose a method, you should not alternate between them.

iow, if you are happy with what it did, use the same method for your next defrag.

----

if speedisk is stopped again, you could try windows defrag.
if that is stopped as well, you will have to decide wether you disable GOBACK (and lose its history) or not.
I do not know which version of goback you have, and this utility must have improved by now.

But I can remember quite a few problems reported.
Most had to do with disk utils (like scandisk, speeddisk....)
(I often read that ghost doesn't like it)

I found an article on how to disable goback versions for gateways
However, the method you want to use should be explained in goback help.

http://www.pcisys.net/~ravnos2/techinfo/MiscSoft.htm

http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxi...ort_notes.html

I also came across a thread where people discuss wether the history can be saved prior to disabling goback.
http://forums.techguy.org/t97880/s45...eeef5bacc.html

anyway, even when I think this is causing your trouble, let's hope speedisk or defrag do not require you disable it.

i ran Spybot and took care of those mentioned files, but i cant reboot in safemode!!!! Ive tried shift, ctrl, and F8. I keep getting scandisk then it launches me into surface test. This is a TigerSystems machine not a viao, why? I am super worried, does this sound like a big problem? Is it fixable? :*(
