My bosses hp 800 mhz pc had the greeting card, no buttons on the taskbar when minimized problem. I followed the directions and removed the programs from uninstall programs. Problem solved, I left a cocky note as to how wise and smart I was.

Another coworker used the computer it locked up, upon restart only 16 colors. It has an onbord s3 savage 133, and hp monitor. Win98 SE.

I spent 3 hours downloading drivers, checking the bios, trying different monitors, scf, disabling all startup progs, virus scan and trying everything I could think of. Although I really do not think it has anything to do with what I did it is quite a coincidence.

Another odd behavior is the startup screen that allows you to chose safe mode, normal and stuff is displayed everytime it boots.

I'm in trouble, please help!

Sounds to me like you need a video driver but if you already tried that then that isn't it.

Hi Grimmy - welcome to CTH. You could try a scanreg /restore to a date before you removed the Friend Greeting application (http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99799).

Provided you havent installed any other new hardware or software, it might be your best option. Win98 backs up 5 copies of your registry by default.

Reboot into DOS using:

Start > Shutdown > Reboot to MS-DOS mode

You will now be in DOS mode, and it should look like this: C:\Windows>

now type scanreg /restore

(note the space between "scanreg" and the forward slash)

At blue screen, use your mouse or keyboard arrows to choose a date which you know the registry was fine. The date you choose must say "Started" next to it.

Make sure the word "Restore" is highlighted, and press your keyboards Enter key. At the "You have restored........." prompt, press your keyboards Enter key.

Your computer will restart in MS-DOS mode again. At the MS-DOS prompt, type Exit and press your keyboards Enter key. Computer will then re-start in Windows. See if that helps.

If the Friend Greeting application is still on the PC, try the manual removal instuctions posted in the link above and this time, reboot and testdrive the PC yourself before allowing others access to the machine.
