Win2k multiple entries - device manager
Just picked up a used Dell C600 laptop with Win2k installed. In the device manager are four entries for a default monitor. I tried uninstalling them and rebooting. No luck. All four were reinstalled. Since I had a full version of the Win2k CD, I ran a repair install. Still no luck - all four were reinstalled again. All I want is one entry listed. Any help will be appreciated.

Is it working ok? I wouldn't worry about it.
You could try installing the drivers for your monitor.

Hey Degsy - Haven't heard from you in quite some time. The last time was when your bailed me out of my media player dilemma. To answer your question - yes, the video display works fine. The correct video display adapter is installed. The problem is I can't find the correct driver for the monitor at Dell because they list too many. The monitor type is not listed anywhere on the laptop. Look under "Display Devices" below and you will see what I mean. Thanks.

If it is working fine then I would leave it.

While I agree with Degs that if it doesn't appear broken, there's no point driving yourself around the bend trying to fix it... I have seen similar before when a laptop (again a Dell - may have even been a Lattitude C600!) had been connected up to many varied external displays (CRTs, LCD, Projectors, TV-Out, you name it, it was a busy little well-travelled laptop). Most of the external displays were simply detected as new "default" monitors, not "plug'n'play" as you would expect.
Most also remained as additional entries after reverting back to laptop display only, particularly if the laptop had been used with both displays simultaneously (i can't be sure "scientifically" this was the deciding factor, I just seem to remember that more often than not that seemed to be the case). Some would disappear after removal of all including the display adaptor in safe mode but I think when the laptop was eventually retired it still had 2 or 3 entries.

This does not present a problem. It appears to have something to do with the video display adapter which has the correct driver installed. You made a valid point when you said it might be a well traveled laptop. This is quite possible. The video quality is however excellent. I have never seen mulpile entries before and didn't know what to do. This is something I can live with. Thanks for the help.
