I have 2 computers running Win98SE, both have nics installed and are configured for cable access with Adelphia Power Link. Lately I have been getting a Windows message saying the following: (The system has detected a conflict for IP address *.*.169.43 with the system having hardware address 00:04:5A:E0:35:6E)
The same message appears on the other computer with different numbers. This does not keep me from getting online but it pops up often and I can't do anything until I click on OK. Any ideas about how to correct this? ** Edited by moderator to mask IP address **

Hi Bobcoop103, welcome to Cyber Tech Help.
Were you swapping the NICs between machines at one point? Start(button) Run... type winipcfg then click the OK(button) for the adapter select the NIC card then click Release then click Renew Do that on both machines and see if your error stops

I now have the network setup with a router-hub combo and I can access the internet with both computers. Now I would like to setup file & printer sharing. I have read conflicting instructions on how to do this especially setting up the second computer. Can someone give this newby some step-by-steps for this procedure in win98?
Thanks, Bob

You can share the printer via Windows File and Printer sharing, but the rig to which the printer is connected would have to be powered on in order to use the printer from the second rig. Otherwise, you'd have to purchase a print server, unless there is a built-in print server in your router/hub combo.
Anyhow, first go to the Network applet in Control Panel, and under the Configuration tab, add File and Printer Sharing. Do this on both rigs. After restarting each, on the rig to which the printer is connected, go to Start>Setting>Printers, then right-click on the icon for your printer, and choose Sharing. Next, click in the radio button beside "Shared As:" and in the Share Name field, give your printer a name. Click on Apply then OK (or just OK if Apply is not a choice). Now, on the second rig, go to Start>Settings>Printers and click on the Add Printer icon. In the Add Printer Wizard, ensure that you choose Network Printer. In the "Network path or queue name" field, click on the Browse button and then browse thru the network path until you find the icon with the printer name (the name that you gave it)....click on OK and then Next. It should now show the actual make and model of your printer in the Printer Name field. You can then choose to print a test page or not. At this point, you may or may not have to install the printer software from the install CD, depending on whether Windows has the driver files for your particular make and model. Once finished, the shared printer should now be displayed in Printers window. Last edited by GretaP; November 28th, 2002 at 10:42 PM. |
