If it's a reasonably new laptop, it'll probably have a network card built in or you can get PCMCIA network card or use USB network cable.
Desktop will need a network card as well.

Hi RoMeRz,
When you have XP installed on both, ensure that WINXP's Internet Connection Firewall is disabled, as this causes a problem with the networked computers "seeing" each other and sharing files and printer. To do so, go to Start>Settings>Network Connections, and then right-click on your Local Area Connection, then choose Properties>Advanced tab. If there is a checkmark in the box beside "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet", click in the box to uncheck it, then click on OK.
When you have the two computers physically hooked up together via the cable, then you can then run the Network Setup Wizard on the host computer first, then on the client computer. To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections. Under Common Tasks, click Network Setup Wizard.
