Hi Peter, here are a few questions for you:
1. Can you see the contents of any CD's from Windows Explorer?
2. Can your computer see the CD-ROM during the Power On Self Test (POST) phase of the boot process? It would show in the same way that your hard drive, floppy, etc do on the startup screens.
3. Are you trying to boot with the CD?
If #2 is NO, then check the physical connections (data & power) to the CD drive - also try a different power and data cable. If it's still not seen then you may need a new drive.
If #2 is YES, then you may have a bad driver in Windows (check in the Device Manager & if there's one installed remove it and restart to let Windows reinstall another driver) or you could have a bad "Read Assembly" in the drive - this doesn't show when the BIOS or Windows interogates the drive, it'll just show as "no disk in the drive". If this is the case, you'll have to replace the drive, but these days they're almost as cheap as floppy drives.
If #1 & 3 are YES, then the boot sequence in BIOS needs to be changed.
