Packard Bell, P111, 64 RAM, Monitor: PB PnP Slim view s530, video card: NEC Savage 4 (inbuilt on mb) running windows 98
Hi, when I boot up i get this message: " There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect, or the current settings do not work with you hardware."
The desktop display settings are set to 840 x 640 and i think the colour is set to 16 (i think). It's like being in safe mode and no matter what i do I can't change them. If you change them it asks for a reboot and then doesnt' change anything. I've tried all the combinations and have also downloaded the driver from the Packard Bell website and installed it to no avail. I recently took the hd out and put it in another machine to correct a problem and think it may have picked up some hardware settings from it. I'm running out of ideas now so would appreciate some help.

Thanks for the interest JTDoom, I had already tried downloading and installing the video driver from the same site. I have now downoaded and installed the monitor driver as well from that ftp site, but still no luck i'm afraid. In device manager it says that both monitor and adapter are working fine. Should I maybe remove the video driver and reinstall it?
Thanking you v. much

well, do you know the drill?
first of all, change explorer view to show all files, show all extentions, and show hidden system folders
in Hardware Manager, set display adaptor to standard VGA
(not standard PCI.)
then you reboot to safe mode. (hold down CTRL or repeatedly tap F8 during boot)
in HW manager, click on the top (what says computer), hit the bullet * ... everything unfolds... look at that stuff, and you will see wether you have hardware that was not installed correct, plus that you would see hardware from the other computer, if any.)
(btw, if you run a system drive as system in another machine, you can expect trouble).
anyway, if that was what happened, I can only say that what was done was done, so let's get on and corrrect this.
remove all instances of the display adaptor
remove all monitors
also look for other yellow splats,
multiple instances of devices you know you don't have, remove all.
when it asks to reboot while you still have not finished removing problem devices, don't reboot.
when you finished, reboot to safe mode
again set to standard VGA
now, boot to normal
and now you can do a re-install of the drivers.
first do the adaptor
at the next reboot, do the monitor
and reboot after that.
I am sure you will figure this one out.
the extracted drivers ought to be on the drive by now.
if it still clamors for the location, you have to perhaps point them to the windows\inf and windows\system folders
(albeit I am reasonably sure the packard bell installer for the adaptor will do well here, you may have to help it locate the info for the monitor... that can be in the folder they extracted to, so make a mental note where that went to, or change the folder it suggested to one you know you can find easily..)

Well JTDoom, I followed your instructions & tried several permatations of the method you gave but still with the same end problem. I did as you said & set display to standard vga & then rebooted to safe mode & removed all instances of display adaptor & monitor. Then I rebooted to sm and found display adapter was already set to standard vga. When i now boot to normal mode it automatically picks up the monitor and adapter and installs them before I get a chance to install them first. I installed the new drivers at this point anyway but still no luck. I must have tried this process 4 or 5 times and in the end had to walk away before I used the hammer on it. I know you said i should be able to work it out but i just couldn' t seem to figure this one. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks, maccy27
