Mayor Ray Nagin (http://cbs2.com/topstories/topstories_story_122143550.html) unveiled a new evacuation strategy for New Orleans on Tuesday that relies more on buses and trains and eliminates the Superdome and Convention Center as shelters.
Hey, Dude. Buses were there for Katrina but wound up under water.
And a lot of people that did not evacuate chose not to do so.
Can not help someone that does not want help.
I have recently been through the Mississippi Gulf Coast cities to the New Orleans 9th Ward District and much, much more than I expected still looks like a war zone after all these months. Cleanup will take years.
I was in Gulfport, Ms when Katrina hit last August. I saw the devastation up close and personal. I also knew people that should have gotten out and chose not to also. The attitude of "been through it before" seemed to prevail.
Maybe next time people won't be so quick to try and fool Mother Nature.

This article True or False.. i dont know???

"The real tragedy of Katrina is that most of the people you see stranded on rooftops, starving in the tropical sun, are the poor, mostly black and creole. Not everyone had a car to escape, or a place to go. When all those people evacuated the Big Easy, where were all the schoolbuses, Greyhounds, and taxicabs? Shouldn't the poor have been evacuated this way instead of being left alone to fend for themselves? And where is the National Guard? They're all in Iraq, that's where! CNN and FOX are doing a bangup job of trying to convince us that "Authorities" are doing all they can, but it's obvious that only a handfull of rescue crews are available at all. They keep showing that same Coast Guard chopper rescuing the same guy over and over, meanwhile screams emanate from within the miles of wreckage, pleading for rescue. Welcome to the Third World of the American South. It's like footage of some Turkish Earthquake, with no real co-ordination or official knowhow on the scene. They knew this was going to happen decades ago and were totally unprepared. Allthose critical hospital patients having to be evacuated at the last moment! Zero foresight at work. Yes, it's an overwhelming storm, but the complete lack of assistance to the threatened population in terms of food, medicine, and just basic safety is a shocking wake-up call for us all. Imagine a genuine bio-terror attack! The powers that be would head for the hills! And that's pretty much what they did in New Orleans. This is still the USA, and those stranded, terrified victims shouldn't have to be in the same horrible circumstances as Indonesian Tidal Wave refugees, devoid of any immediate help. It's a sickening thing to see. Wait until Typhoid breaks out. They better get on this quick or the entire nation is going to be under the threat of epidemic. And some folks think survivalists are nuts."

BM, I'm sorry to say most of it is absolutely true. Many were poor and black.
The government was the biggest failure. From the most local district rep to the top of the presidency, all looked the other way when they were needed the most. The failure did not just happen with the storm but many years prior when warnings were issued and scenario's just like this were projected. But not until this storm did anyone finally recognize their mistakes. Look at hurricane Rita shortly after Katrina. Ships loaded with food, water, medical and other supplies rode the last waves of Rita into the coast for immediate dispersal and help. The same help should have come with Katrina.
Why do people continue to live 7 feet below sea level? Why not? Years and years and years go by without problems. You get complaisant. You do, after all, live in "The Big Easy". Layed back and easy. The blues sing it best.
My local Pensacola Beach fishing pier was made of old wood. It was destroyed by a hurricane many years ago. It was rebuilt stronger only to be torn apart again later by another hurricane. It was rebuilt using cement foundations and structures. It was destroyed again. It was rebuilt again and again. I can go fish on that pier today. Why keep rebuilding it? Why not?

Edit: No, I don't think the government should help me in all my needs. I can help myself.

And where is the National Guard? They're all in Iraq, that's where! The National Guard was in Iraq? So, what are the Marines doing?

Those who chose not to evacuate have only themselves to blame. Stop complaining that the government didn't help you, they're not your babysitter. Those who couldn't evacuate shouldn't have been slumming in a flood-prone coastal area, especially since you were warned of Katrina weeks beforehand. No one who was in New Orleans when Katrina hit deserves any sympathy as none have a good excuse.

I agree. If you choose to live by the ocean in a city that is below sea level you are on your own as far as I'm concerned. "Stupid is as stupid does" as a wise man once said.

Predicted comments of concern from some. Expected nothing less. I just tell it as I see it also. Oh, and the ocean, it's the Gulf. I know. Salty water is salty water and it is connected to an ocean somewhere.:D
Elvis song 'Guitar Man' referred to same: "If you ever take a trip down to the ocean, find yourself down around Mobile,...." Still the Gulf.:thrilled:
Don't shoot me. I'm only the piano player.
