If you're running WIN98SE, have you tried d/loading and running the WIN98SE Shutdown Supplement (http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/wurecommended/s_wufeatured/win98se/) ?

Hi b|ingB|ing - If you are still having problems after trying the troubleshooting steps that GretaP posted, run a search for rundll.exe and when you find it, make a shortcut to it on your Desktop.

Next, rightclick the shortcut and choose Properties. In the Target Box, add the following text after the text that is already there but leave a space before you type:

user.exe,exitwindows

and the click OK. It should look like this C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe, exitwindows

When you want to shutdown, doubleclick the icon.

For a quick restart, create another shortcut and follow the steps above but this time type:

user.exe,exitwindowsexec

after the text that is there. It should look like this

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindowsexec

Let us know if this helps.

If you click on the "Shutdown and Restart Shortcuts" link in the left sidebar on that page, it describes the shortcuts you can create on your desktop for shutting down and restarting (the same as AnnMarie tried to describe in her response).

Create a shutdown shortcut on your desktop, and then see if that assists you in shutting down properly.

Hi b|ingB|ing - Spider (one of the Moderators of this forum) noticed your problem earlier today and left me some instructions to help you. Spider thought that your situation would be helped by downloading and installing updates from Windows Update (and I also think its a great idea).

While Internet Explorer is open, click on the Tools Menu and then click on Windows Updates. Spider left me these screenshots to help you. Just follow the visual instructions.
