ok here is a big one Have a Gateway 450 Win 98. Some files were deleted and then in attempt to retreive them the reg is gone, also. When it tries to load windows98 it says Vfat has made a error system halted. Part of Win is there. The other big problem is the Win98 that came with the computer is gone!!!!
So my mother has same computer is there anyway to retreive files from hers andrestore mine? Cdroms and all work. Tried a new copy of Win98 it won`t read it but reads other cds like the sys restore (ony in DIR) no execuatable files. Any suggestions?
Thanks am totally stumped.

You could first try restoring the registry. It might be a long shot, but worth a try. When you start your computer, press and hold down the Ctrl key shortly before the "Starting Windows" message. You should get the Windows 98 Startup Menu. From there, choose "Command Prompt Only". At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt, key in:
scanreg /restore
A blue screen named Microsoft Registry Checker should then come up. There will be a choice of I believe it is 5 previous good registries to restore to. If you don't want to choose the topmost one that is highlighted, or if you choose it the first time and it doesn't work out, use your down cursor keys to highlight another, then hit ENTER key (as Restore is the default option of Restore and Cancel). After about 20 seconds, you should get a message that previous registry has been restored. Hit ENTER key to restart.
Hope this works!!

If my previous suggestion doesn't work out for you, have a look here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q139063) and see if the troubleshooting steps help you.

Try it this way . ( note the space after scanreg )
Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMI pool message comes on ) or Press Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computor .
Select , Command prompt only . ( NOT Safe mode Command prompt )
After the C prompt , type , scanreg /restore
Follow the prompts and select a registry dated prior to the problems .

ok this could all be from a bigger problem maybe is it possible that the supernova worm could have caused this? I removed all the hello-kitty icons previous to this happening but may not have got it all. The scanreg/restore did not work in dos. Can try again.
Did get instructions for the worm see that I missed a step. Any help is appreciated.
