Hi All!

Not sure if this is the right place to post this problem; sorry if it isn't!

Yours truly, was having trouble with Outlook Express. Every time I tried to "Send/Receive All" I got this message:

Can't do it ... make sure your server name, account, protocol and all that stuff is correct. Well I couldn't find that stuff anywhere so I went to the troubleshooting part of Help.

In there, it said if you were having problems with OE that it was sometimes better to uninstall it and then reinstall it and it would fix missing or messed up files.

Well, that sounded pretty good to me, so I did that. Before doing that I looked for how to reinstall it but every time I clicked on display that info, it would come back with the uninstall info.

So I did it anyway! And now I can't find out where to get OE 5 back! I went to MicroSoft Downloads and entered it every which way but backasswards ... all that would come up is patches and stuff, not the whole OE 5.

I tried a couple of searches with Google but can't find the whole thing that way either.

Sooooooooo, does anybody know where I can find OE 5 again, please?

I have Windows 98SE and I HAD Outlook Express 5. 5.50.4807.1700

Hi Patches

Go in the Control Panel and select
Add/Remove Programs
Double click "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools"
In the Box that pops up select "Add a component" and click OK.
In the next window select Costom in the drop down menu.
Scroll down to Outlook Express, check the box and click Next
Outlook Express should install.

Hi GS!

Thank you for replying to my post! I just finished reinstalling OE by following your easy-to-follow instructions -- why don't they tell you it's that simple? :)

One little question: When you reinstall like that, does it come from inside your computer .. or from online? Do I now have to go to Windows Update and get all the patches and fixes I had before I uninstalled it?

I think I'll go look for updates anyway .. haven't done that for about a week.

Thanks again, GS

I don't know what I ever did without you kind people!

Oh No!

I just opened OE to see if the problem I'd been having was fixed and it's not. Tried to Send/Receive All and got the same message:

The host 'sympatico' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'sympatico', Server: 'sympatico', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

That's what I didn't know how to do! Just before I got that message for the first time, I had been trying to manage 3 identities I have in there ... I wanted to delete all of them and start again with just one. Is that how it got messed up and started giving me that error message, I wonder?

Oh! Must you have an identity at all? Can't you just use OE without having an identity?

Thanks again!

UPDATE!

I just finished a couple of tutorials at Sympatico and got my OE to connect and check for mail. I couldn't find that kind of help before .. but I was bound and determined, darn it!

The settings had been changed but I know that I did not do it intentionally!!! and have no idea how they could have changed. I'm the only one who touches this computer.

I guess I'll keep the one main identity and ignore the other two. I'm going to leave well enough alone now that it works again.

So, thank you people for putting up with me. Sometimes I surprise myself.

Glad you got it working.

When you reinstall like that, does it come from inside your computer .. or from online? It comes from inside your computer.
It's in the cab files in the "C:\Windows Update Setup Files" folder

Must you have an identity at all? There has to be at least one identity, but if you don't want to enter
a name it will just list it as "Main Identity".

Thank you very much, GB, for answering those two questions!

And I'm glad I got it fixed too. :D

Be seeing you!
