Go here and download and run Belarc Advisor. It will tell you everything about your system.

Will that include sound card info? I'm not getting any sound and I'm not to computer savvy?I opened the tower but, I can't locate the sound card. Can it be built into the motherboard? Where the speakers plug into the back of the tower, it's not on a seperate slot.
How does that site work? The way i'm imagining it doesn't sound safe? thanks

It is very safe. It is a small program that will analyze your system.
It will list all hardware components that have drivers installed.
Yes, It should list the sound card. And yes, You may have onboard sound.

It may be just a corrupt file. If you have onboard sound, You would need to disable it in the BIOS before adding a PCI sound card.
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > System
Click the device manager tab. Are there any yellow !'s or ?'s ?
Also click the + next to sound, video and game controllers.
What is listed for audio?

You need to reinstall the sound card drivers. Do you have a drivers CD that came with your computer?
If not what make and model is your PC?

They may be, Place the CD in the CD-Rom and then 'browse' the cd. Look for a folder titled 'drivers' or it may be 'Win98' then drivers.
Look for soundmax audio. Remember where they are located.
If they are on there, remove the cd, then open the device manager again and right click on soundmax audio and click remove. Reboot
When Windows detects the sound card and asks for the drivers, place your cd in and 'point' the wizard to the location of the drivers.

Check your Email, email me and I will send these files to you and show you how to install them, it will be easier this way.
The files I will be sending you are:
smwdm,sys
smwdm.inf
smx.cat
These are small files which will install the drivers for the card. I downloaded them from the site that tb525 listed.

Do this. go back to device manager and highlight the one with the yellow splat and then hit the REMOVE Button.
Now reboot and Windows will find that the driver is not installed and a wizard should come up. When asked point it to the flopply that you put the drivers on to install them. When done, reboot

I did just like you said and when I rebooted, windows did it's thing automatically (wouldn't let me point to the floppy) and under device status it's still saying the same thing:confused:  Anything else we can try? Do integrated sound cards just crap out? It's about two years old.

Create a new folder on your desktop (Right-click / new / folder)
Select those three files I sent and copy to this folder on your desktop
Remove the device again from device manager
Now click refresh
Get out and go into control panel | add new hardware
Do not allow Windows to search, select Sound , check have disk and point to the folder on your desk top
That should find the *.INF file and install the drivers,
Reboot
