The key is usually on the case the CD came in, the book that came with the CD or sometimes the manufacturer puts it on a sticker on the case.
If you can't find it any of those places, your best bet is to call Microsoft, explain the situation and see if they'll issue you a new key. Failing that, you need to look around, maybe on Ebay, and see if you can buy a copy of 98, making sure it comes with a key.

You could have gotten the productkey from the registry of your Windows system, but now, it's most likely gone because of new install and will have to follow Miz's advice. If you can back out of the install and get widows to come up, you can retrieve the productkey.
Bummer, huh?

Drive around on trash day and you will likely find a 98 computer in the trash. With only a little luck you will find one with the key sticker still on it. ;)

Find a lot of these in S. Florida, oink?
Can't say for sure up here in the panhandle but then I never really looked.:D

Just gave my kids one for their lan games. PIII 1000, 40 gig, very nice enlight case with ps, Epox Ep-3PTA, 98se sticker. I picked it up for the case as I have paid good money for that brand which I'm partial to. I popped it open and it was new. Someone built it new, first build I would guess, and they never got it to work correctly so it sat and got dusty. The board wasn't mounted securely and it had a 3v video card when the board only supports 1.5v. I switched out the video and improved the ram. It works great.
My mother uses a early gateway pIIII with xp I got pretty much the same way. I also gave her a pretty nice gateway pII 700 with 98 that my dad uses for movies and solitaire. I go to work early half the time (I switch shifts on rotation) and if I drive by one that looks good I pick it up. Usually the worst thing wrong is a dead hd or blown ps. In that case I fix them and send them off to a new home. The last one had a 17 inch monitor next to it that in retrospect I should have picked up if the condition of the computer is any indication. People toss win98 machines all of the time, so much so that you can just pick up the nice looking ones. My kids were complaining about one of their guest computers and this one is better than that one so they got an upgrade. I guess with the low price of cheap computers people just toss the old and buy a new one. I'm not Fred Sanford. I just can't drive buy what looks like a perfectly good computer. Usually they are just infected and just need to be wiped.

Hey, I ain't knock'n it. "One man's junk is another man's treasure".
Have a friend that works in a thrift store and as she gets half off of the already ridiculously low prices, I cruise through sometimes and put my mark on some items. She has brought me brand new name brand shirts at a giveaway price. Price tags still on many items. It's crazy.:dizzy:
You're right. It's a throw away world nowadays. I'm not above grabbing something good off the trash heap.;)
