Ok I am not really very sure as to what is wrong with this computer, however it's deffinatly not right!! It's being very slow (insanely so) and keeps freezing. It also sometimes just restarts itself without any warning, and when ever I am on the internet, pages constantly keep timing out(especially hotmail?!)
Also if I have more then say three pages open, they all get messed up and you cant access them properly. A FURTHER problem, is that my mother gave me a CD with pictures in, but whenever I put it in the CD Drive, it says there is no CD in the Driver. Its just not recognised. any help would be greatly appreciated! ![]() oh by the way I don't know if these details are important, but its a windows 98 system and I am currently in china...if taht could have anything to do with the problems? thanks! |

Welcome to CTH
Sorry no one responded, maybe takes to long to get to China. OK to your problem. The symptoms you described are classic for a HEAT problem. So 1st need to rule that out. Open the case up. if you can visualy see dust, cob webs, fur balls, food, chopsticks, rice...you need to clean it out. Using compressed air is the best way, but any way to get the dust and dirt out. Just be careful while cleaning, obviously unplug the computer, and do not use a WET RAG.... If there is a bunch of dirt/dust on the Heatsink and or fan that sits on top of the processor, it needs to be cleaned. Best way is to physically remove the heatsind and fan. There should be clips holding the unit on top of the processor, slight pressure to disengage one side will remove it. Once off take the fan off of the heatsink (usually 4 screws hold it on) then clean the heatsink, you can use water, whatever it takes, just make sure it is dry before reinstalling. The fan can be cleaned with isoprople alcohol and q-tips. TYou will need some thermal paste for the bottom of the heat sink to reapply. If there is none available where you are at, and there is still some on the bottom of the heat sink, then clean the heat sink, leaving the bottom alone so you can re-use it. Once this is reinstalled and the inside of the case is clean, double check all cables to make sure they are tight. Leave the case cover off and reboot the computer. If this solves it great. Whether it does or not, you need to clean up the hard drive. 1. Use Ccleaner to clean up temp files and some unused ones. 2. Go to START > RUN type in msconfig hit OK then go to the Start-Up TAB, this shows what programs are starting with windows and run in the bacxkground (can hog your resources). The only Start Up items you absolutely need are: ScanRegistry SystemTray LoadPowerProfile Anti-Virus (if applicable) TaskMonitor Uncheck all others hit Apply, reboot, say Yes when the window pops up and check the box that says don't tell me again what I did..... Let us know what happens after you do this.
