You'll need to install the modem's drivers (the software that allows the modem to communicate with Windows).

Look through the disks that came with the computer (or the modem if added later) to see if there's one with the modem's drivers.

If you don't have a disk and know the make and model of the modem, you can go to the modem manufacturer's website and download the drivers.

l have windows xp on a 80gig drive and windows98 on a 20gig drive l disconnect them and only use one at a time to stop any conflict. but 98 tells me could not detect modem it may be in use turned off or not properly installed...question what port should a modem be connected to? and how can I change the port? how can I tell if the modem is installed properly? it works on my other drive..I really want to get windows 98 up and running I'm having lot of problems with XP it keeps telling me it has to shut down and can't get anything done....thks Jim

To check the modem, first go to Control Panel>System>Device Manager tab. If there's a yellow warning mark next to the Modem, then Windows doesn't think it's installed or installed correctly.

If that's the case, you'll need to find the Windows 98 drivers for that modem, either on a disk that came with the computer or download them from the modem manufacturer's website and install them.

If there is no yellow splat, double click the modem listed and make sure "Disable in this hardware profile is not checked and it says, "This device is working properly" on the General tab.

If all that checks out, go to Control Panel>Modem>Diagnostics tab, click once on the COM port the modem is using to select it and then click on the "More Info" button. See what it tells you.

It's more than likely it's a Plun-n-Pray modem and may assign port 5 as well as port 2 or 3. I'd clear all the modems from device manager and reinstall again. Actually it's best to have com1 and com2 turned off in the bios.
