For the past month all of my emails have the paperclip on every piece of mail I receive. This is in the window where your emails are listed - they don't show up in the viewing pane because there are no attachments. When I do receive an email that really does have an attachment (with the big yellow paperclip) sometimes I can open them and other times they are "grayed out". I haven't done anything differently (that I know of). How do I get rid of these arbitrary clips and how do I get back the "grayed out" ones?

Sometimes it can mean that images were send in the email but OE has blocked/extracted them for security purposes.

I could understand that if there was an attachment to begin with but what about the paperclips that definitely do not have attachments?

Have you checked in Tools/Options/Security. to make sure the box
"Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus"
is unticked ?

AVG will do that if you have it configured to "certify" incoming email.
If you have AVG, open the Control Center, click on "Email Scanner" then at the bottom, click on the Properties button. In the Window that opens, click on the Configure button. Uncheck "Certify Mail" under "Check Incoming Mail." Click OK and OK again, close the Control Center. That will not stop AVG from scanning the mail, it will just stop it from telling you it's okay and adding that attachment.
See if that sorts things out.

It was the AVG scanner - thanks for everyone's help. Don't know what I would do without CTH!
