I have 4 cd drives listed in device manager, the 2 that I have & 2 generic drives.I have tried removing them in device manager but they just keep coming back, this is an old "99" Win 98 system & I don't recall doing anything that would create them. My 2 drives are a cd-rom & a cd burner both years old, the only problem I notice is that on occassion when I put a cd in either drive Explorer wont read it till I put any cd in the other drive, even a blank cd, any suggestions ?? Doesn't bother the comp, just that I've had this for over a year now & can't figure out how to get back to my 2 drives,
Bob

What you might do is, go into My computer>Open>Right click,Properties>Hardware>Left Click Properties and see if this will give you some Info. to help you out; you can do this for all your disk.If you have a troubleshooter try that.I hope this maybe of some help?

Boot to safe mode and remove those extra items from device manager.
If they still return, in device manager, open properties on the 'phantom' drives and put a check mark in 'Disable in this hardware profile' and see what happens then after a reboot.

I have tried all suggestions, to no avail. Guess when it bugs me enough I will do a clean install of 98.
JTdoom I did try a program that installed virt. CD drives, I went back & d/loaded it again & clicked on unmount drives, didn't help, anyway tks. for the suggestions will just live with it for now,
