attaching to an email in Thunderbird

Anyone have a suggestion why attaching any kind of file just locks up TB?
Problem was not solved by reinstalling using a mozback restore, a fresh install or even an upgrade to 1.05.02. It just locks up TB and task manager simply reports application is not running.
PC is running XP Pro SP 2.Any help would be appreciated.
